Confusion abounds on how to bill and code for some of the latest treatment techniques including dry needling, canalith repositioning, cold laser and many other techniques without clear coding guidance. Continuing Education courses that teach these techniques recommend a multitude of ways to bill and code for these techniques oftentimes without a good understanding of the rules and regulations related to billing and coding. This course concept was developed through a multitude of PTs asking questions regarding how to successfully and correctly code and get paid for new and developing techniques as well as existing techniques that have confusing coverage policies. Therapists are challenged every day to stay current on published evidence and ever evolving treatment. Along with that come the responsibility and challenges for getting paid for what is done in the clinic. Different payers have different policies related to newer techniques. In addition, CPT rules are specific and the APTA has also established white papers on some of these techniques. It is important to understand how all of these factor together in order to correctly bill and get paid for what you do in the clinic. This course will walk through a process of the key items to evaluate when billing for problematic codes as well as discuss some specifics about procedures such as dry needling.
Robbie B. Leonard, PT is a 1986 graduate of Clemson University (BS Microbiology) and 1988 graduate of Duke University (MS Physical Therapy). Robbie is currently the Chief Operating Officer for the Medical Billing Center. The Medical Billing Center bills for outpatient therapy practices located throughout the U.S. Mrs. Leonard has clinical and administrative experience in a variety of settings including inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. Mrs. Leonard has served as an educator in both the academic and continuing education settings. She has provided continuing education seminars nationwide in the areas of administration, Medicare, billing and coding, compliance, and neurological rehabilitation. She has taught in the academic setting at MUSC and at Western Carolina University, and guest lectured for other academic programs. Robbie has been an active APTA member since 1986 and has served the SCAPTA chapter in the past as District Chair, Delegate, Treasurer, and as a Key legislative liaison. She currently serves on the APTA Public Policy and Advocacy Committee and is a member of the Private Practice Section.
